Paradoxically, at the same time, data, information, knowledge, cultural production, and scholarship are far more accessible, appropriable, and manipulable than ever before. New media attract widespread attention, more pliable technologies emerge with increasing frequency, and--most importantly--young generations of students and faculty with aptitudes, skills, and expectations borne of a world massively defined by the Internet and its progeny are populating the halls of academe. The convergence of the once distinct technological and social meanings of the term "network" is evident in the rise of communities of remote collaborations among friends, acquaintances, students, and researchers. These developments compel academic libraries to consider how best to apply new technologies to suit users' demands and to satisfy their institutional and educational missions. Google Tech Talks July 15, 2008 ABSTRACT Google is the Web's premier creator of user-friendly Web 2.0 applications, and we have long viewed it as part of our mission to do for users in the long tail (AKA users with special needs) what we've achieved for the mainstream user see this Google I/O talk entitled Design Patterns for Enhanced Accessibility for background. Accessibility 2.0 is now a hot topic on the Web and we would like to move from a world where AJAX applications were a straight No-No with respect to blind users to a world where these same technologies are used to enhance their usability for everyone. Google-AxsJAX is an Open Source framework for injecting usability enhancements into Web 2.0 applications. In this talk, Charles Chen and T. V. Raman will give a hands-on tutorial on using AxsJAX. The tutorial will cover the following: A brief introduction to the additional opcodes introduced by W3C ARIA to the assembly language of the Web (AKA HTML+JavaScript). AxsJAX library abstractions built on the above that help Web developers generate relevant feedback via the user's adaptive technology of choice. Steps in creating fluent eyes-free interaction to Web applications, including enabling rapid access to parts of a complex Web page. The tutorial will provide a step-by-step walk through in defining AxsJAX enhancements to a Web page including: An overview of the developer tools we use. Discovering pain-points in Web interaction and designing improvements iteratively. And time permitting, we might even demonstrate how Raman now makes up for all the time he save thanks to an efficient eyes-free auditory user interface by playing JawBreaker and reading XKCD via their AxsJAXed versions. Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2.0 with Pwnage Tool In this video, I demonstrate how to utilize the PwnageTool (2.0.1) to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone with 2.0 software. I'm not using an iPhone 3G, but an old model which uses EDGE only. Remember the difference between jailbreaking and unlocking. Jailbreaking an iPhone will allow custom software (outside of the App Store) to run while unlocking an iPhone allows one to use the iPhone on a different carrier such as T-Mobile. The Pwnage tool gives you an easy to use interface to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. It provides giant buttons that are easy to read and follow. Note, you should have already downloaded the latest Apple firmware as well as the latest BootLoader files. The tool will prompt you to download them if you haven't already. I also demonstrate "advanced mode" which gives you options to customize the firmware even further. You can tell it to activate the iPhone or not, disable the partition wipe, customize the root partition size, (pre)install custom packages, customize boot logos, or whether to preload Bootneuter for unlocking. After customization, you click the giant "Build" button which builds a custom firmware with all the customizations defined. You then have to restore this custom firmware to your iPhone through iTunes. This invovles putting the iPhone in DFU mode. The tool does a decent job of guiding through the process of holding the right buttons at the right time. Once this is done, the hard part is over! Just wait until the phone boots, runs the appropriate programs, and you'll have a jailbroken, unlocked iPhone! Enjoy! Willkommen im Internet (Teil 2 von 2) Nach meinem "Statement zur Killerspiel-Debatte" gibt es nun die Fortsetzung auf's Auge, in der ich Euch erklären möchte, wie das denn mit diesem Internet so läuft. Schließlich reden ja alle über dieses ominöse Phänomen. Der Film entstand im Laufe des Oktobers 2008 mit dem Programm Flash MX und einer handelsüblichen Computermaus. Sämtliche Zeichnungen und Animationen sowie die Synchronisation entstammen meinem Hirn, meiner Hand und meinem Kehlkopf. Wie immer habe ich ihn zuerst auf meiner Homepage karpfenschleuder.de veröffentlicht, was aber eher zu mäßigem Andrang führte, da viele der großen Funblogbetreiber ihn gar nicht erst verlinken wollten. Deshalb gibt es den Film nun als Zweiteiler auf Youtube zu sehen, damit wenigstens Ihr ihn zu Gesicht bekommt. Ein Hoch auf das Web 2.0 Achtung: Wer den Film in High Quality sehen möchte, sollte hinter die URL einfach ein "&fmt=18" (ohne Anführungszeichen) setzen.
