reactable: basic demo #1 http://mtg.upf.edu/reactable The reactable, is a multi-user electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface. Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving physical objects on a luminous table surface. By moving and relating these objects, representing components of a classic modular synthesizer, users can create complex and dynamic sonic topologies, with generators, filters and modulators, in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language. This instrument is being developed by a team of digital luthiers (Sergi Jordà , Martin Kaltenbrunner, Günter Geiger and Marcos Alonso), at the Music Technology Group within the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Youscope (oscilloscope demo) a demo using an oscilloscope to display something. - third in assembly 2007 shortfilm compo - most original entry at assembly 2007 - scene.org awards nomination to most original concept, breakthrough performance and best animation. IMO The effects used have been seen way too many times and the design isn't great: just some simple effects one after another and useless scroll text. I just didn't have better ideas or time to design it better! Answers to many way too often asked questions: The code runs on quite ordinary PC. The oscilloscope is connected to soundcard and is in X/Y-mode, with right channel connected to X and left to Y input. Z (brightness) input is not used. Waveform: http://kapsi.fi/~jpa/stuff/other/youscope-wave.flac (flac) / http://mirror.kapsi.fi/koodaa.mine.nu/tvt/youscope-wave.wav (pcm wav) to see it on your oscilloscope. If you think it's fake, FIND SOMEONE WITH OSCILLOSCOPE AND TRY IT YOURSELF! Most soundcards (and other players) seem to have a lowpass filter at about half of the samplerate, making some effects here look quite strange. The soundcard used in this video had quite low quality and didn't filter properly. It just happens to be suitable for these effects. MUSIC: http://koodaa.mine.nu/tvt/youscope-soundtrack.mp3 pouet link: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=31592 It's made with a C program I programmed myself. You probably don't want to read its messy quickly finished source code. I also know vector displays or showing pictures on oscilloscope isn't actually a new idea, I just wanted to try making something myself ;) Tags: youscope oscilloscope demoscene assembly |

Tech: Apple Lisa Demo (1984) http://www.Alfred.TV READ ME FIRST: The intro is VERY long. Let it buffer for 5 minutes to skip directly to the Lisa demo. Filmed in 1984, Alfred (yes, that's me) demonstrates the $10,000 Apple Lisa computer on a tri-state cable channel. This was a very early 'mass introduction' to a system that had a graphical user interface, icons, pull down menus, and a rodential input device called 'a mouse.' Tech : NeXT Cube Demo http://www.Alfred.TV READ ME FIRST: In this video, with a run time of 53 minutes, I give a cursory overview of the hardware and operating system centric to the NeXT Computer. When Steve Jobs was stripped of all managerial rights at Apple in 1985, he resigned and started NeXT. In the mid 90's, when Apple was in dire straights for a modern, multitasking operating system, they looked to purchase Be for their BeOS. When that deal fell through, they negotiated with NeXT. With the purchase, which was for about $500 million, not only did they get the NextStep/OpenStep OS, they also got back Steve Jobs. The acquisition of NeXT, which was orchestrated by the current Apple CEO, Gil Amelio, saved the company from pending disaster. So, join me for a some time-travel to 1990, where I will give you a peek at the roots of the modern Mac OS X operating system which many of us enjoy and use today. Make sure to stay through the credits for the post video bonus scene featuring a Power Mac 7500, an Apple ][, and my nephews, Mike and Chris. Note: The REASON why this was filmed early on Thanksgiving more was due to my personal and business schedule. It was the only time I could do it in order to fulfill my promise of 'booting the NeXT Cube' prior to 2009. If you'd like to see the raw, archival uStream broadcast, which is a bit light-hearted as I interact with the live audience, please visit the URL below and click on the link for 'archived videos.' The broadcast is broken up into multiple parts for easier consumption. http://www.ustream.tv/adiblasi Please note that I did indeed film and edit this video for YOU, my regular and loyal YouTube and uStream subscribers and viewers. I hope you enjoy it. Bad jokes were kept to a bare minimum to keep the focus on the NeXT Cube. Overall, the performance of the machine was really quite amazing, especially considering that the CPU was a 68040 at 25 mhz with 16 megabytes of RAM! Will Wright and Brian Eno - Spore Creature Demo Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2006/06/26/Will_Wright_and_Brian_Eno "The Sims" designer Will Wright demonstrates the character-creation phase from his latest game, "Spore," with additional commentary by musician Brian Eno. ----- Will Wright and Brian Eno on "Playing with Time." In a dazzling duet Will Wright and Brian Eno give an intense clinic on the joys and techniques of "generative" creation. Back in the 1970s both speakers got hooked by cellular automata such as Conway's "Game of Life," where just a few simple rules could unleash profoundly unpredictable and infinitely varied dynamic patterns. Cellular automata were the secret ingredient of Wright's genre-busting computer game "SimCity" in 1989. Eno was additionally inspired by Steve Reich's "It's Gonna Rain," in which two identical 1.8 second tape loops beat against each other out of phase for a riveting 20 minutes. That idea led to Eno's "Music for Airports" (1978), and the genre he named "ambient music" was born. The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years - The Long Now Foundation Tags: spore sim sims maxis ea electronic arts video games demo beta preview user wil right creatures creator creating editor |
